Acupuncture Effective for Cervical Pain

Updated: Apr 29, 2022

Recent research has confirmed the effectiveness of acupuncture for cervical spondylosis, a type of arthritis caused by wear and tear of the discs in the cervical spine. As the spinal discs degenerate over time, osteoarthritis occurs and bony spurs form, causing pain and stiffness in the neck.

More than 85% of people over the age of 60 in the United States suffer from cervical spondylosis. If the condition is left untreated, it can lead to spinal compression or pinched nerves. In western medicine, cortisone injections or painkillers are prescribed to help with the inflammation and pain; however this may only provide temporary relief and may cause long-term side effects.

Acupuncture for Cervical Spondylosis

Acupuncture works by encouraging the regeneration and repair of damaged tissue to prevent further degeneration of the cartilage between the vertebrae. Acupuncture also improves blood flow and reduces inflammation to ease pain and stiffness without side-effects.

According to one study, acupuncture had a 96.2% effective rate at relieving pain from cervical spondylosis. In another clinical study, 31.7% of patients recovered completely from cervical spondylosis with no pain or symptoms experienced whatsoever after a single course of acupuncture treatments. A minimum of 10 treatments was required for the optimum results of the studies.
