Chinese Medicine Effectively Shrinks Uterine Fibroids

Updated: Jan 28

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign uterine tumors, affecting 60% of reproductive-aged women. They grow inside the cavity, walls, or on the outside of the uterus.

Most uterine fibroids don't typically cause symptoms, but around 20% of patients have symptoms such as:

  • pelvic pain

  • severe bleeding and spotting

  • long periods (18-42 days)

  • painful periods

  • iron-deficiency anemia

  • infertility

Surgery is often required by Western medicine to treat uterine fibroids, but can cause complications. Several medications may be required to treat symptoms of uterine fibroids: NSAIDS for pain, hemostatics to reduce bleeding, and iron supplements to help with anemia. None of these medications, however, will help to reduce the fibroids.

It is possible to shrink uterine fibroids naturally and relieve symptoms with the application of Chinese medicine and dietary changes.

Chinese Medicine for Fibroids

According to Chinese medicine, uterine fibroids are caused by poor circulation through the reproductive system. Acupuncture improves circulation throughout the body and the reproductive system to clear stagnant blood and keep the body revitalized and healthy.

Chinese herbal medicine is also prescribed to shrink fibroids, either alongside or independent of an acupuncture regimen. Many Chinese herbs have anti-inflammatory properties that work to reduce fibroid size and ease symptoms of pain. They have a measured effect at lowering progesterone levels thought to cause uterine fibroids.

They also increase circulation to keep the reproductive system supplied with healthy blood and reduce the length and heaviness of periods.

In a Japanese study, herbal medicine had a 62% total effective rate at shrinking uterine fibroids. In the same study, the herbs were able to alleviate excessive menstrual bleeding, anemia, and pain.

Before taking any Chinese herbal medicine, consult with a licensed Chinese medicine practitioner to ensure the formula is customized for your individual needs.

Lifestyle Changes for Fibroids

Lifestyle changes must also be implemented alongside treatment. An anti-inflammatory diet can assist in balancing hormones and preventing fibroids from growing. Good foods to include in a fibroid-relieving diet are:

  • Seaweed

  • Cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines)

  • Legumes

  • Seeds and nuts

  • Green vegetables

  • Green tea

  • Black wood ear (edible mushroom)

Red meat, gluten, alcohol, margarine, and sugary foods should be avoided.
