If you constantly feel congested, wake up with sinus pressure, struggle with post-nasal drip, or feel like your sinuses never completely clear, you may be dealing with more than an occasional sinus infection.

Chronic sinusitis can leave you feeling stuffy, tired, foggy, and frustrated—especially when the symptoms keep coming back.

Many people find themselves cycling through nasal sprays, decongestants, allergy medications, and sometimes antibiotics, only to have their symptoms eventually return.

The good news is that acupuncture offers a natural approach that may help reduce sinus symptoms, support healthy drainage, and address some of the underlying patterns contributing to chronic congestion.

What Is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis, also called chronic rhinosinusitis, occurs when the tissues lining the nose and sinuses remain inflamed for an extended period of time.

Unlike an acute sinus infection that develops suddenly and resolves relatively quickly, chronic sinusitis can persist for 12 weeks or longer.

Symptoms may include:

  • Nasal congestion

  • Sinus pressure

  • Facial pain or pressure

  • Post-nasal drip

  • Thick nasal mucus

  • Headaches

  • Reduced sense of smell or taste

  • Cough

  • Ear pressure

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

Some people experience significant facial pressure and congestion, while others mainly notice that they can never breathe completely freely through their nose.

Why Do Sinus Problems Keep Coming Back?

This is one of the most important questions I ask.

If you're constantly dealing with sinus problems, simply addressing the mucus may not be enough. We also need to consider why the tissues continue to become irritated and inflamed.

Chronic sinus problems may be associated with factors such as:

  • Seasonal or environmental allergies

  • Chronic nasal inflammation

  • Nasal polyps

  • Structural problems within the nose

  • Recurrent respiratory infections

  • Irritants in the environment

  • Immune-system factors

This is why I prefer looking at the whole picture rather than simply waiting for the next flare-up.

Can Acupuncture Help Chronic Sinusitis?

Research suggests acupuncture may be helpful for people with chronic sinusitis.

Acupuncture is often used to help reduce sinus pressure, promote healthy nasal function, and support the body's response to inflammation.

A systematic review of randomized clinical trials found that acupuncture, either alone or alongside conventional treatment, was associated with improvements in chronic rhinosinusitis symptoms and quality of life.

For someone who feels like they're constantly congested or dealing with recurring sinus pressure, acupuncture can be a wonderful addition to a comprehensive treatment plan.

How Does Acupuncture Help Sinus Congestion?

When I'm treating someone for chronic sinus problems, the goal isn't simply to make the nose feel less stuffy for a few hours.

We want to encourage healthier function throughout the sinus and respiratory system.

Acupuncture may help support:

  • Sinus drainage

  • Nasal airflow

  • Healthy circulation

  • The body's inflammatory response

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Immune function

  • Relief from facial pressure and discomfort

Local acupuncture points around the nose, forehead, and face may be combined with points elsewhere on the body depending on the underlying pattern.

And don't worry—the needles used around the face are extremely thin!

Sinusitis and Allergies

For many patients, chronic sinus congestion and allergies go hand in hand.

If your symptoms become worse during certain seasons, after spending time outdoors, around pets, or after exposure to dust or other environmental triggers, allergies may be contributing to the inflammation in your nasal passages.

In these cases, I don't want to focus only on opening the sinuses.

I also want to support the body's overall response to those triggers.

Acupuncture can be incorporated into a broader wellness plan designed to support respiratory health, immune balance, and seasonal allergy symptoms.

A Chinese Medicine Perspective on Chronic Sinusitis

Traditional Chinese Medicine doesn't view every case of sinusitis the same way.

One person may experience thick yellow mucus, intense facial pressure, and headaches, while another has clear drainage, fatigue, and congestion that worsens every time the weather changes.

Those are very different patterns and should be treated differently.

Common Chinese medicine patterns associated with chronic sinus problems may include:

  • Lung Qi deficiency

  • Spleen Qi deficiency with Dampness

  • Phlegm accumulation

  • Wind-Cold

  • Wind-Heat

  • Damp-Heat

The color and consistency of mucus, location of pressure, digestion, energy levels, allergies, sleep, and other symptoms all help determine the appropriate treatment.

This individualized approach is one of the things I love about Chinese medicine.

We're not just treating "sinusitis." We're treating the person experiencing it.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Chronic Sinus Problems

Depending on the individual, Chinese herbal medicine may also be incorporated into treatment.

Herbs can be selected according to your specific pattern to support healthy sinus drainage, respiratory health, and immune function.

Someone experiencing an acute flare with thick mucus may require a completely different herbal approach than someone with long-standing congestion associated with allergies and fatigue.

That's why I recommend individualized herbal formulas rather than choosing a generic "sinus supplement" based solely on the diagnosis.

Looking Beyond Your Sinuses

When sinus problems keep returning, I also like to look at what's happening throughout the body.

Depending on the individual, we may discuss:

How is your digestion?

Do you have seasonal allergies?

How is your sleep?

Are you frequently getting sick?

Are certain foods making congestion worse?

Are you exposed to environmental irritants?

Do your symptoms change with stress or the seasons?

Looking at these patterns can help us create a much more comprehensive approach than simply treating congestion every time it appears.

How Many Acupuncture Treatments Are Needed for Chronic Sinusitis?

There isn't one number that applies to everyone.

Someone experiencing a recent flare-up may respond differently than someone who has struggled with chronic sinus problems for 10 years.

The frequency and length of treatment depend on factors such as how long you've had symptoms, how severe they are, whether allergies are involved, and your overall health.

As symptoms improve, treatments can typically be spaced farther apart.

The goal is not simply temporary relief after each treatment. We want to help create longer-lasting improvement in how you feel between treatments.
