Could SIBO Be Causing Your Bloating? What You Need to Know

One of the most common things I hear from new patients is, "I feel six months pregnant by the end of the day."
Bloating, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort, and unpredictable bowel habits can make everyday life miserable. Many people spend years trying elimination diets, probiotics, supplements, and over-the-counter medications without ever finding lasting relief.
One possible cause of these symptoms is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, commonly known as SIBO.
Although SIBO has received a lot of attention in recent years, it's important to remember that not every digestive problem is caused by SIBO. Many different conditions can produce similar symptoms, which is why finding the right diagnosis is so important.

What Is SIBO?
Your digestive tract is home to trillions of bacteria, and most of them belong in your large intestine.
SIBO occurs when bacteria that normally live in the large intestine become excessive or out of balance in the small intestine. As these bacteria ferment carbohydrates before they should, they can produce excess gas that contributes to symptoms such as:
Bloating
Excessive gas
Abdominal discomfort
Diarrhea
Constipation
Feeling overly full after meals
In some cases, SIBO can also interfere with nutrient absorption and contribute to vitamin deficiencies or unintentional weight loss, particularly if it becomes severe or longstanding.
Why Does SIBO Develop?
SIBO usually develops because something has disrupted the normal balance or movement of the digestive tract.
Several factors may increase the risk, including:
Reduced intestinal motility
Previous abdominal surgery
Structural abnormalities of the digestive tract
Diabetes affecting nerve function
Certain medications
Conditions that reduce stomach acid
Disorders affecting the immune system
Rather than asking only, "How do we treat SIBO?", it's equally important to ask,
"Why did it develop in the first place?"
Addressing underlying contributors may help reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
Not Every Case of Bloating Is SIBO
One of the biggest misconceptions on social media is that bloating automatically means you have SIBO.
The reality is that bloating has many possible causes, including:
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Food intolerances
Celiac disease
Constipation
Pelvic floor dysfunction
Gastroparesis
Inflammatory bowel disease
Carbohydrate malabsorption
Functional digestive disorders
Because symptoms overlap so much, diagnosing SIBO based on symptoms alone isn't reliable.
How Is SIBO Diagnosed?
Breath testing is currently the most common noninvasive test used to evaluate for SIBO. During the test, you drink a sugar solution, and hydrogen and methane gases in your breath are measured over time.
While breath testing can be helpful in the right clinical situation, it isn't perfect. Results should always be interpreted alongside your symptoms, medical history, and overall clinical picture.
A Whole-Body Approach to Digestive Health
Whether or not SIBO is part of the picture, my goal is always the same: to understand why you're experiencing digestive symptoms.
In my practice, I look beyond bloating alone and consider factors such as:
Your eating habits
Stress levels
Sleep quality
Blood sugar balance
Digestive function
Nutrition
Hormones
Lifestyle
Acupuncture may also be incorporated into a personalized treatment plan. While acupuncture isn't a treatment for SIBO itself, it may help support digestive function, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being as part of a comprehensive approach to digestive health.
💡 Dr. Stephanie's Tip: If you've been struggling with chronic bloating, don't assume it's "just SIBO" because you saw it on social media. Many digestive conditions share similar symptoms, and getting the right diagnosis is the first step toward finding the right treatment.
You Don't Have to Live With Chronic Bloating
Digestive symptoms are common—but they aren't something you should simply learn to live with.
Whether your symptoms are caused by SIBO, food intolerances, IBS, or another digestive condition, identifying the underlying cause is the key to lasting improvement.
If you're tired of living with bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort, I'd love to help. Together, we'll take a personalized, root-cause approach to understanding your symptoms and creating a treatment plan that helps you feel better from the inside out.
