Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) doesn't only affect your thoughts and emotions—it can affect your entire body.

After experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of alert long after the danger has passed. You may feel anxious, tense, easily startled, unable to relax, or constantly "on guard." Sleep may become difficult, your mind may race, and even seemingly small triggers can cause a powerful physical or emotional response.

For many people with PTSD, it can feel as though the body has forgotten how to switch off the stress response.

This is one reason acupuncture can be such a valuable complementary therapy. By supporting nervous system regulation and encouraging the body to move into a calmer state, acupuncture may help with some of the physical and emotional symptoms that often accompany PTSD.

What Is PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.

Although PTSD is often associated with military combat, trauma can take many forms.

It may develop following:

  • Military combat

  • Physical or sexual assault

  • Serious accidents

  • Natural disasters

  • Medical trauma

  • Childhood trauma

  • Domestic violence

  • Sudden loss

  • Other frightening or life-threatening experiences

Everyone responds to trauma differently. Developing PTSD isn't a sign of weakness—it reflects changes in how the brain and nervous system respond after trauma.

What Does PTSD Feel Like?

PTSD symptoms can affect both emotional and physical health.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Anxiety

  • Hypervigilance

  • Feeling constantly "on edge"

  • Flashbacks

  • Nightmares

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Irritability

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Avoidance of trauma reminders

  • Muscle tension

  • Depression or low mood

  • Feeling emotionally disconnected

  • Being easily startled

Some people also experience headaches, digestive problems, chronic pain, fatigue, heart palpitations, or other physical symptoms associated with prolonged stress.

This mind-body connection is incredibly important when we're looking at ways to support someone recovering from trauma.

Can Acupuncture Help PTSD?

Research investigating acupuncture for PTSD has shown promising results, particularly for symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, and overall PTSD symptom severity.

Acupuncture is especially interesting because it allows us to work with the physical side of the stress response.

Instead of requiring you to talk through your traumatic experience during the acupuncture treatment itself, you can simply lie comfortably while we focus on helping your body relax and regulate.

For someone whose nervous system has spent months or years in a heightened state of alert, creating opportunities for the body to experience safety and relaxation can be incredibly valuable.

Acupuncture and the Nervous System

One of the reasons I love acupuncture for stress-related conditions is its relationship with the nervous system.

When we're under threat, the sympathetic nervous system activates the familiar "fight-or-flight" response.

Your heart rate increases. Your muscles tighten. Your breathing changes. Your senses become heightened. Your body prepares to respond to danger.

That's exactly what the nervous system is supposed to do.

The problem occurs when the danger is gone, but the body continues behaving as though it's still there.

Acupuncture may help encourage the nervous system to shift away from this heightened stress response and toward the parasympathetic—or "rest-and-digest"—state.

Many patients notice this shift during treatment. Their breathing slows. Their muscles relax. Their shoulders drop. Some even fall asleep on the table.

Supporting Anxiety and Hypervigilance

One of the most difficult aspects of PTSD can be the feeling that you can never completely relax.

Your nervous system may remain constantly alert, scanning the environment for potential danger even when you're safe.

Acupuncture may help promote relaxation and reduce some of the physical tension associated with chronic stress and anxiety.

Over time, supporting nervous system regulation may help the body become better able to transition between periods of stress and periods of rest.

Acupuncture for PTSD and Sleep

Sleep disturbances are extremely common with PTSD.

Some people struggle to fall asleep because their mind won't shut off. Others wake frequently, experience nightmares, or wake feeling as though they never truly rested.

Because acupuncture promotes relaxation and supports nervous system regulation, improving sleep is often one of the first changes patients notice during treatment.

Better sleep can have a ripple effect throughout the body, supporting mood, energy, concentration, stress resilience, and overall health.

A Chinese Medicine Perspective on Trauma

Traditional Chinese Medicine has always recognized the connection between emotional experiences and physical health.

Trauma doesn't simply exist in the mind. It can influence sleep, digestion, energy, muscle tension, pain, emotional regulation, and many other aspects of health.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, PTSD symptoms may involve patterns such as:

  • Heart and Shen disturbance

  • Liver Qi stagnation

  • Qi and Blood stagnation

  • Heart Blood deficiency

  • Kidney deficiency

  • Phlegm disturbing the Shen

Treatment is individualized according to each person's symptoms and constitution.

Two people diagnosed with PTSD may therefore receive very different acupuncture treatments.

Looking at the Whole Person

When someone comes to New Direction Natural Medicine for anxiety, PTSD symptoms, or chronic stress, I don't look at emotional health in isolation.

I also want to understand:

How are you sleeping?

How is your energy?

Are you experiencing chronic pain?

How is your digestion?

Do you feel constantly tense or "wired"?

Are hormone changes contributing to anxiety?

What happens physically when you're under stress?

These pieces matter because the nervous system doesn't operate independently from the rest of the body.

Our goal is to support the whole person.

Depending on your needs, your wellness plan may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine when appropriate, nutrition, lifestyle recommendations, and other strategies designed to support nervous system health.

Acupuncture Can Complement PTSD Treatment

Acupuncture doesn't have to replace psychotherapy, medication, or other PTSD treatments.

In fact, it can be incorporated alongside conventional mental health care as part of a more comprehensive approach.

Trauma-focused psychotherapies remain among the most established treatments for PTSD, while acupuncture may provide additional support for relaxation, sleep, anxiety, physical tension, and overall well-being.

I believe there is tremendous value in bringing these approaches together.

Mental health and physical health aren't separate—and treating the whole person means recognizing both.
