Acupuncture Reduces Stress

Updated: Jan 27

Stress is up in our modern life: stress at work, online, and at home. According to the 2017 Gallup poll, 8 in 10 Americans experience moderate to high levels of stress daily. Stress can be detrimental to physical as well as emotional health. Chronic stress can cause or worsen health issues, including:

  • Mental health problems

  • Cardiovascular disease

  • Gastrointestinal disorders

  • Obesity

  • Menstrual problems

  • Hair loss

  • Skin disorders (acne, psoriasis, eczema)

Everyone experiences stress from different causes and in individual ways. With acupuncture, the practitioner works with each individual's body to relieve the root causes of stress and anxiety naturally.

Acupuncture for Stress

According to clinical study, when under stress the body underproduces certain hormones in some areas of the brain and overproduces them in the adrenal cortex, increasing feelings of stress. Acupuncture works to regulate these hormones, decreasing their production in the adrenal cortex and increasing hormone production in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to balance out the body's biochemistry.

People who sleep poorly are also more likely to be tense and anxious as well as tired. Acupuncture improves sleep quality by increasing and regulating melatonin production in the body for deeper, more restful sleep.

Chronic stress can result in illnesses due to the strain of the hormonal imbalance on the body, and acupuncture bolsters the immune system to fight off illness and infection.

Electroacupuncture (a modern process where needles are stimulated by a light, pulsating electric current) was also proven to be effective at lowering hormones produced in response to stress.
