Congee: The Ancient Gut-Healing Breakfast You Need to Try

If you've ever struggled with bloating, poor digestion, low energy, or you're recovering from an illness, one of my favorite healing foods is something incredibly simple: congee.
Congee is a traditional rice porridge that has been used throughout Asia for centuries as both nourishment and medicine. In Chinese medicine, we believe that good health starts with a strong digestive system, and congee is one of the gentlest ways to support it.
Because it cooks slowly with plenty of water or broth, the grains become incredibly easy to digest. Your body doesn't have to work as hard to break it down, allowing you to absorb nutrients while giving your digestive system a chance to rest and recover.
I often recommend congee for patients dealing with bloating, gastritis, chronic digestive issues, fatigue, postpartum recovery, or simply anyone who feels like their body needs a reset.

Ingredients:
1 cup organic jasmine rice
6 cups filtered water plus 2 cups bone broth or chicken broth
½ teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon grass-fed butter (optional)
Directions:
Rinse the rice thoroughly.
Add the rice, broth, water, and salt to a slow cooker.
Cook on low for 6-8 hours or overnight, until the rice breaks down into a creamy porridge.
Stir before serving and add your favorite toppings.
My Favorite Ways to Eat It
For a sweet breakfast, add:
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Walnuts
Fresh berries or diced apple
A drizzle of raw honey after serving
For a savory meal, add:
Soft-boiled eggs
Scallions
Ginger and garlic
Shredded chicken
Sautéed vegetables
A splash of coconut aminos or hot sauce
What I Want You to Know
Sometimes the most powerful healing foods aren't expensive supplements or complicated recipes. They're simple, nourishing meals that have stood the test of time.
If your digestion feels off, your energy is low, or you're recovering from illness, adding a bowl of warm congee to your routine can be a gentle way to support your body's natural healing process.
