Acupuncture Relieves Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Updated: Jan 28

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist that leads to tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hand. Though women are up to three times more likely to get carpal tunnel than men, it can affect anyone at any age.

Western treatment includes over-the-counter pain relievers, cortisone injections, and surgery involving cutting a ligament in the wrist to relieve the pinched nerve. Unfortunately none of these treatments are ideal. Prolonged cortisone injections can weaken the tendons and ligaments at the injection site and make pain worse over time, and surgery may cause infection, nerve damage, stiffness, and pain in the scar.

With acupuncture, it is possible to safely and naturally relieve pain, decrease inflammation and numbness, and restore motor dexterity.

Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system to alter the pain response in the median nerve being compressed by carpal tunnel syndrome. In studies, acupuncture was able to relieve symptoms starting at the source--the brain--by speeding up recovery and even rewiring the parts of the brain connected to the damaged nerve.

Acupuncture also increases circulation throughout the body as well as specifically in the damaged area (known as microcirculation). Better blood movement encourages faster nerve regeneration to ease the feelings of tingling, weakness, and numbness.

Additionally, acupuncture has a relaxing effect on muscles that can help relieve tension in the wrists and ease the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.

In clinical study, acupuncture had a 95.2% effective rate at treating carpal tunnel syndrome. 66.7% of those patients experienced a complete recovery, without any symptoms of compression or nerve damage remaining.
