Indigestion is one of those symptoms that's easy to ignore until it starts affecting your everyday life.

Maybe you feel overly full after just a few bites. Maybe you're dealing with bloating after every meal. Perhaps you're reaching for antacids so often that you keep a bottle in your purse, your desk drawer, and your kitchen cabinet.

And then there's the question I hear all the time:

"Why does this keep happening?"

As an acupuncturist and functional medicine practitioner, that's exactly the question I want to answer.

Because indigestion isn't a diagnosis.

It's a symptom.

And symptoms are clues.

What Is Indigestion?

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a broad term used to describe discomfort in the upper digestive tract.

Common symptoms include:

  • Bloating

  • Upper abdominal discomfort

  • Feeling overly full after eating

  • Early satiety (feeling full after only a small amount of food)

  • Burping

  • Nausea

  • Burning in the upper abdomen

  • A sensation that food is simply "sitting there"

For some people, symptoms appear only occasionally.

For others, every meal feels like a gamble.

What Causes Indigestion?

This is where things get interesting.

There isn't one single cause of indigestion.

Possible contributing factors include:

  • Eating too quickly

  • Chronic stress

  • Food sensitivities

  • Low stomach acid

  • Delayed gastric emptying

  • Gut infections

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Certain medications

  • Hormonal changes

  • Gallbladder dysfunction

This is why I don't believe in treating indigestion with a one-size-fits-all approach.

Two people can have identical symptoms but completely different underlying causes.

The Stress-Digestion Connection

Have you ever eaten lunch while answering emails, taking phone calls, and mentally planning dinner?

Your digestive system has noticed.

Digestion requires your body to be in a rest-and-digest state.

When your nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight, digestion becomes less of a priority.

Blood flow shifts.

Digestive secretions change.

Motility slows.

The stomach and brain are constantly communicating, which explains why stress can have such a profound effect on digestion.

This is one reason stress management often becomes an important part of improving digestive symptoms.

Can Acupuncture Help Indigestion?

Research suggests that acupuncture may improve symptoms and quality of life in people with functional dyspepsia, a type of indigestion without an obvious structural cause. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found improvements in symptoms such as post-meal fullness, early satiety, and upper abdominal discomfort, although researchers continue to call for larger, higher-quality studies.

One of the things I appreciate most about acupuncture is that it doesn't focus solely on the stomach.

It looks at the entire digestive process.

How Acupuncture May Support Digestion

Researchers are continuing to investigate exactly how acupuncture influences the digestive system.

Current evidence suggests acupuncture may help support:

  • Gastric motility

  • Gastric accommodation

  • Communication between the digestive system and the nervous system

  • Gastrointestinal hormone regulation

  • Stress management

  • Overall digestive function and quality of life

Many patients also notice improvements in symptoms that frequently accompany indigestion, including:

  • Bloating

  • Stress

  • Poor sleep

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Irregular bowel habits

That's one of the reasons I enjoy treating digestive conditions.

The symptoms rarely exist in isolation.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine has always viewed digestion as one of the foundations of health.

When digestion isn't functioning properly, everything else can begin to suffer.

Energy declines.

Nutrient absorption becomes less efficient.

Inflammation may increase.

The digestive patterns I commonly see in patients with indigestion include:

  • Liver Qi stagnation

  • Spleen Qi deficiency

  • Stomach Qi rebellion

  • Dampness

  • Food stagnation

This is why two patients with indigestion may receive completely different acupuncture treatments.

Chinese medicine doesn't simply treat the symptom. It treats the pattern.

Dr. Stephanie's Tip: If you inhale your lunch in six minutes while scrolling through your phone and answering emails, your digestive system would like to file a formal complaint.

I know.

We've all done it.

One of the simplest changes you can make is to slow down.

Sit down when you eat.

Put your phone away.

Chew your food.

Take a few deep breaths before your first bite.

Sometimes the most powerful digestive intervention isn't another supplement.

It's giving your body permission to eat in peace.

Looking Beyond the Stomach

At New Direction Natural Medicine, I don't stop at the question, "What should we do for indigestion?"

I also want to know:

  • How are you sleeping?

  • Are you skipping meals?

  • Do you experience bloating?

  • How stressed are you?

  • Do you feel full after only a few bites?

  • Are there foods that consistently trigger symptoms?

  • How are your bowel movements?

  • Are you relying on antacids?

These questions help us uncover patterns that might otherwise be missed.

Your treatment plan may include:

  • Acupuncture

  • Chinese herbal medicine

  • Nutritional recommendations

  • Functional medicine testing

  • Lifestyle modifications
