Acupuncture More Effective than Drug for Endometriosis Relief

Updated: Sep 29, 2019

Endometriosis affects more than 6.5 million American women a year, and millions more worldwide.

Endometriosis is a disorder where tissue that normally lines the uterus grows in areas outside of the uterus. While it usually occurs in the lower abdomen or pelvis, it can be found anywhere throughout the body.

Symptoms of endometriosis include:

  • Pain in pelvic or lower abdominal area (usually worse during menstruation)

  • Infertility

  • Bloating

  • Constipation

  • Painful bowel movements

  • Pain when urinating

  • Blood in the urine

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

Western medicine can miss endometriosis for years, and treatment masks the symptoms rather than treating them. With Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the root causes of endometriosis pain are addressed for maximum relief.

Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Endometriosis is classified as an auto-immune disorder. Acupuncture boosts the immune system and improves liver function to stimulate and regulate the release of hormones in the body that control menstrual cycles. Stress can have an additive effect on the painful symptoms of endometriosis, but acupuncture works with the central nervous system to trigger a full relaxation response in the body.

Acupuncture increases circulation through the reproductive system, delivering vital nutrients to uterine tissues and purging stagnant blood and toxins to regulate and lighten menstrual bleeding.

In clinical study, acupuncture had a 92% total effective rate at treating pain from endometriosis. Mifepristone, a Western steroid commonly prescribed for endometriosis, only had a 52.2% effective rate. The patients receiving acupuncture also had smaller pelvic masses at the end of their treatment than patients receiving mifepristone.

Chinese herbal medicine can also work in tandem with acupuncture treatments. It helps to effectively move and discharge menstrual blood as well as relieve inflammation caused by endometriosis, easing the associated pain and bowel symptoms. Since every individual experiences endometriosis differently, no two herbal formulas will be the same. Consult with a licensed Chinese herbal medicine practitioner before taking any herbal prescriptions for endometriosis.

If you or a loved one suffer from endometriosis, invasive surgeries or increasing doses of painkillers aren't necessary for relief! Acupuncture is a more effective way of treating endometriosis pain and preventing it from coming back.
