A Chinese Food Therapy Recipe to Support Digestion and Calm the Mind
Stress has a way of showing up in our digestion.
Have you ever noticed that your stomach feels unsettled before a big presentation, during a difficult week at work, or after an emotional conversation?
You're not imagining it.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the digestive system and the emotions are deeply connected. One of the most common patterns I see in practice is Liver Qi stagnation affecting the Spleen, where ongoing stress disrupts healthy digestion.
Symptoms may include bloating, abdominal discomfort, IBS, nausea, poor appetite, or that familiar "nervous stomach."
This soup was created with those connections in mind.
It's warm, comforting, naturally gluten-free, and filled with ingredients that nourish digestion while helping the body cope with stress.
Why This Soup Supports Both Digestion and Emotional Well-Being
Ground Turkey
Turkey provides satisfying protein while gently nourishing Qi in Chinese medicine. It helps replenish energy without feeling heavy, making it an excellent choice for people who feel fatigued or depleted after periods of stress. Protein also supports blood sugar stability, which can influence mood and energy throughout the day.
Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite foods for supporting the digestive system.
In Chinese medicine, they strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, support healthy digestion, and gently replenish Qi. Their naturally sweet flavor also makes this soup comforting without relying on refined sugar.
Kale
Kale is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but it also has a role in Chinese food therapy.
Dark leafy greens are traditionally associated with supporting the Liver. Since the Liver is closely connected to the smooth flow of Qi and emotions in Chinese medicine, incorporating greens like kale may help support overall balance, particularly during times of stress. Because kale is cooked in this recipe, it's often easier to digest than a large raw kale salad.
Carrots
Carrots add gentle sweetness while helping support the Spleen and digestive system. Orange vegetables are commonly recommended in Chinese food therapy for people experiencing sluggish digestion, fatigue, or bloating.
Leeks and Garlic
Leeks and garlic create a flavorful base while adding warming qualities to the soup.
In Chinese medicine, warming foods help support digestive function and encourage the smooth movement of Qi. They also provide natural compounds that support immune health and overall wellness.
Coriander
Coriander (cilantro seed) has long been used to support digestion. In Chinese medicine, it's traditionally used to move stagnant Qi and help ease digestive discomfort, making it a wonderful addition for anyone dealing with bloating or a "stuck" feeling after meals.
Marjoram (or Herbs de Provence)
Marjoram is one of my favorite calming herbs.
Its warm, aromatic flavor complements the soup beautifully while traditionally being used to promote relaxation and help move stagnant Liver Qi—making it a fitting ingredient for a recipe designed to support both digestion and emotional well-being.
Turmeric
Turmeric adds vibrant color while supporting a healthy inflammatory response. In Chinese medicine, warming spices like turmeric also help keep Qi moving, making them a great addition when stress contributes to digestive discomfort.
Lemon Juice
A squeeze of fresh lemon at the end brightens the soup and balances the earthy flavors.
In Chinese medicine, sour flavors are associated with the Liver, making lemon a natural finishing touch for a meal designed to support both digestion and emotional balance.

Ingredients:
1 lb organic ground turkey, 95% lean
1 sweet potato (orange or purple), diced
2 stalks celery, diced
2 carrots (orange or purple), diced
1 leek, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
6 cups organic chicken broth or bone broth
6 handfuls kale, chopped with stems removed
Juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp dried marjoram (or Herbs de Provence)
1 tsp dried coriander
½ tsp ground turmeric
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp sea salt
Pinch of black pepper
1 tablespoon avocado oil
Directions:
Heat the avocado oil in a large soup pot over medium-high heat.
Add the leeks, carrots, celery, sea salt, and black pepper. Sauté for about 3 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 additional minute.
Stir in the chicken broth, diced sweet potato, ½ teaspoon marjoram, ½ teaspoon coriander, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
While the soup is simmering, cook the ground turkey in a separate skillet. Season with the remaining ½ teaspoon marjoram, ½ teaspoon coriander, and a sprinkle of sea salt and black pepper. Cook until browned, then drain any excess fat.
Add the cooked turkey, chopped kale, and fresh lemon juice to the soup. Simmer for 2 minutes, just until the kale is wilted.
Divide into bowls and enjoy warm.
💡 Dr. Stephanie's Tip: If stress tends to affect your digestion, don't just focus on what you're eating—pay attention to how you're eating. Sitting down, slowing your breathing, chewing thoroughly, and enjoying a warm meal without distractions can support healthy digestion just as much as the ingredients themselves.
